What it actually does
Our own website is built on Framer, and after years of wrestling with WordPress, we're not going back. Honestly? If you can picture it, Framer can build it. It works like a design canvas, not a template you squeeze your business into: drag things exactly where you want them, and what you see is exactly what goes live. That's the big difference from Wix and Squarespace. Your site looks like your brand, not everyone else's template. And you don't have to build it all by hand. Framer has its own AI built in, so you can describe a page or section and it'll create it for you to tweak. It also connects to AI assistants like Claude, which we've used to fix issues, redesign sections and make big changes without touching a line of code. Changes stay as drafts until you hit publish, so nothing goes live by accident. No plugins to keep updating, no developer needed to change a heading. Smooth animations are built in, pages load fast (which Google loves), and Framer looks after hosting, security and the behind-the-scenes search engine bits for you. We run our blog and resource hub on it, and we're building our shop on it too, with a separate checkout tool handling payments since Framer doesn't do online stores on its own. It runs in your browser, so nothing to install. Free to build and test on a Framer web address.
Best for
Service businesses, consultants and creatives who want a website that looks custom-designed and actually reflects their brand. Great if you're over paying a developer every time you need to change one sentence, or your WordPress site feels held together with sticky tape. Running a big online store? Shopify will suit you better.
What it does well
Gives you a freeform canvas instead of forcing your brand into a fixed template.
Builds fast, polished pages with animation, mobile layouts, hosting and search tools included.
Uses built-in AI to draft pages and supports Claude for approved edits that stay in draft.
Makes it easy for a small team to update pages, blogs and content without a developer.
Watch-outs
Does not include a native online shop, so you need a separate checkout for products.
The canvas is more capable than a simple template builder, so it takes some learning.
Editor seats, extra AI credits and add-ons can increase the bill.
Page, bandwidth and content limits vary by plan and can require an upgrade.
How it earns its place
Framer has had the full workout: it runs our whole website, including every page, our blog, our resource hub, and soon our shop. We moved across from WordPress because we were done with plugin updates, security scares and waiting on someone else to change one sentence. Now we make changes ourselves in minutes, and the site actually looks like ProjectBox, not a template. That's why it's here. It gives a small business a properly custom website without a developer on speed dial, and with its built-in AI and Claude on hand, even a big redesign doesn't need a line of code. If your website is the thing you avoid touching, Framer fixes that.
